City of Angels: JF CHEN....NEVER Redundant!!!

Faux Bois Table and Chairs, Antler Chair Gilt Mirror and Display of Ice Tongs
When in LA...there are certain things one must do. Top of the list? Shopping! Some might assume Rodeo Drive might be the ultimate shopping destination, but when I was visiting, there were a list of places a bit off of Rodeo that were much more important to this design blogger. JF Chen was part of that list. Christian May of Maison 21 was the ultimate LA host, squiring me to and fro and being very patient while this newbie ooo'd and ahhh'd. You see...he had been here many times before, most recently with Heather Clawson of Habitually Chic.
Both Christian and Heather took photos at JF Chen....and then I come along a few days later and join the party. I think it is very interesting to see how we each "see" a place..what captures our imagination and how our minds work. Design stars like Kelly Wearstler and Michael S. Smith, as well as movie stars like Robert Downey Junior all find their individual voices here. Perhaps you will find our differing blogger viewpoints interesting as well!

Porcelain Crow in a Wire Cage
Christian and I began our tour through the fabulous wonderland of JF Chen in the rooms upstairs, where there is almost an overwhelming amount of stimuli to take in. Upon first sight, it takes your breath away. As I was filtering through the numerous photos I had taken, it struck me that I kept coming back to those I had taken in the huge exhibition space on the first floor. JF Chen hosts events in this space that is at once urban warehouse, and at the same time, another world that is quiet and almost mystical with it's ethereal play of light through the massive paned windows. I felt transported.

Soul Catchers on Metal Console with Tin Mirror
Most recently, JF Chen had hosted an event which included the art work of internationally acclaimed artist, Michele Oka Doner, which no doubt contributed to my sense of magic. Her work, entitled Soul Catchers, is based on the primitive practice of forming raw materials into skull like forms, which were thought to prevent one's soul from leaving this life prematurely. You can see her soul catchers on the console above, with a cache of wind blown leaves rustling below.

Biedermeier Couch with Root and Stone Stools and Gilt Chandelier
The space was almost cathedral-like, ancient and modern, both. There was room for each piece of furniture, sculpture and vignette to stand on it's own. Less a "shop" and more a gallery...which is certainly the intent for this very different space.

Italian Marble Table with row of White Porcelain Antlers and Sculpture of Jesus

Antlers Entwined on (what looks like) Train Model Turf!

Full Shot of the Beautiful Bird Cage

Carefully Edited Pieces for the Exhibition. I can imagine a large party going on in this room for the art opening....the people and voices still had a faint echo.

Red Metal Phoenix Coat Rack and Massive Armoire

One of a Pair of Blackamoor Busts

Wise Porcelain Owl stands Watch
It wouldn't be fair if I didn't jump back upstairs to show you what I found most fascinating....there was truly so much, it was hard to narrow it down. So, I am showing you some things that are a bit different from the recent blog posts from Christian and Heather (although many of my photos were of the same things!) There was so much to see...I think we did not overlap by much!
Bronze and Wood Chair. Chest of Drawers by Charles Eames and Herman Miller. Rare Greta Grossman Cobra Reflector Table Lamp by Ralph O. Smith.
I wanted to show you the room which looked to be the office of Joel Chen. It was more Mid century Modern than other spaces, although Mid century abounds throughout JF Chen.

Bender Madsen Armchairs, End table: Jean Prouve Round Wooden Gueridon
If only I had had more time to learn more about each and every piece! I wish knew more about the very cool leather sofa in this vignette, as well as the butter colored leather wing back chair.

White on White
There was so much to see, and so many ways it was all displayed. It is such a laboratory for mixing it up. I am always drawn to white on white. I loved the forms in this collection of vessels, the crude wood stands, the lamp and serpentine chest.

Venetian Glass Mirror, Murano Glass Leaf Sconces, Greek Key Metal Chairs

Quite a departure from the "white on white", this vignette shows a more formal side with the huge Venetian Glass mirror, sconces and beautiful chairs.
Painted Screen, Chinese Fretwork Chair and White Porcelain Lamp
Beautiful Crystal Chandleier, Goatskin Screen, Collection of Wish List Accessories
Tufted Leather Faux Bamboo Chairs, Venetian Glass Mirror, Mirrored Console and X Bench
Tony Duquette Clam Shell Stand, Pairs of Chairs
Joel Chen was able to obtain a number of items from the estate of Tony Duquette, one of which was this three tiered giant clam shell stand. Perhaps one of my favorite items in the shop!
Bobbin Turned English Rosewood Armchair, Murano Glass Torchere, African Mud Cloth Pillows
Stoneware Sculptures by Joanna Patterson, Green Silk Rope Chairs

Assortment of white modern sconces, Mid century Buffet

Masculine "Study" Vignette with French Bistro Club Chairs, Nail head Leather Armchair

There are so many wonderful design ideas to be found here. My mind races every time I revisit these photos. I loved this vignette of a very masculine desk area with the black leather chair with nail head trim, and the black and white objects on the desk.

Another example of how varied the inventory is at JF Chen. This area shows a collection of Danish Modern , and I love the glass bubble light fixture!
Jean Royere Style Sconce, Duquette-like Red "Coral" in Shell Vases
JF Chen Light Fixture
JF Chen not only offers furnishings, lighting, art and accessories from all over the world, they also offer custom light fixtures of their own design, like the Beehive Lantern above. Gorgeous, no?
Greek Key Mirror works beautifully with the Honeycomb Patterned Chest. Gourd Lamp.
It was a bit of a thrill when Christian and I were about to leave, Joel Chen came in and met with us. We chatted for a bit about the state of the economy and how it has affected the antique business, about his recent travels to Northern Europe to find the best for his shop, recent shoppers like Robert Downey Junior (who was buying a group of very cool industrial sconces!). Joel was very kind, and wealth of knowledge. A big "Thank You" to him for taking the time to chat!
I think what struck me most about JF Chen was the pure exuberance in how different periods and styles were displayed. It showed such a creative talent and interest in so many art forms. Never static, always interesting.. JF Chen inspired me to experiment and not be shy about presenting unexpected ideas to my clients.
I could have stayed for hours...but the hour was getting on and I had a long drive back up north ahead. But I left with many ideas and much inspiration for my trip home.

City of Angels: Party at Almont Yard

Balcony off of Kathryn M. Ireland Showroom above Almont Yard. Photo katiedid.

Los Angeles is nothing if not a hot spot for great parties! When I was down, I had the good fortune to be Christian May's (Maison 21) date for what might be a design blogger's fantasy party. Many of you have heard of the chic design community known as Almont Yard in West Hollywood which consists of Lucas Studio, Inc., Harbinger, Nathan Turner Antiques, and Kathryn M. Ireland . Well....imagine an event hosted by our favorite online decor "sale" aficionados, the gals at One King's Lane, Susan Feldman and Alison Gleb Pincus. Then imagine that all of the designers that have their studios and shops at Almont Yard in attendance! Then go one step further and imagine even more design stars, media celebs and favorite design bloggers enjoying this fantastical affair! Heaven?! Why yes it was!
Here are just a few of the stars out that night:

Harbinger is such a great shop, as all of the shops and studios are at Almont Yard. It is a "must see" if you are planning a jaunt to LA anytime soon.

A bit of a side note: Nathan Turner has a Designer Profile on the One King's Lane site HERE. Just in case you want to check it out!

The stunning Giada De Laurentiis of Food Network's Everday Italian. Photo by Stephanie Keenan
Designer Oliver Furth, who you may have seen on some high profile blogs lately! Photo by Stephanie Keenan.
There were so many others there! I got to meet the oh-so-talented designer and blogger, Brooke Giannetti from Velvet and Linen, and Coleen Rider from Coleen and Company, who BTW is one of the founders of online magazine and encyclopedia, Balistrade and Bitters (check it out and join the registry HERE!)
It was an evening to remember, especially because I got to hang out with these guys:
Me with new friends Olga, Lisa Borgnes Giramonti of A Bloomsbury Life, and Christian May of Maison 21 in the Kathryn Ireland Showroom.
I couldn't have asked for a nicer group to hangout with!
I was planning on taking scads of photos, but the party was quite the madhouse! I was able to get a few of the Nathan Turner shop and you can see why you must take any opportunity to visit ALL of the shops! They are equally amazing.

For many more photos of the Almont Yard shops, you can hop on over to Habitually Chic HERE for Nathan Turner, Joe Lucas Inc. and Harbinger HERE and HERE and Kathryn Ireland HERE. Brooke at Velvet and Linen also had some amazing photos from that night HERE. She had her lucky daughter in tow. It looks like they had a fantastic time! I wish we could have had more than a fleeting "hello" as she and her daughter were whisked away for Leila's Open House.

All and all, this was the highlight of my trip! So a big thanks to all of the designers (especially to Joe Lucas for his very kind emails and photos!) for opening their wonderful shops, and to our lovely hosts from One King's Lane ( hop on over to check out the sinfully good deals...tell 'em I sent'cha!)....
and to my good friend and date for the evening, the charming Christian May! Thank you so much for including me!

City of Angels: Margaret Russell at WS Home

The beautiful Margaret Russell of Elle Decor at WS Home
Hi all! I am back from Oregon (more on that later!) and ready to tell you my LA stories! I have to say I made the mistake of not making plans sooner for my trip, as I could have fit more in, but the trip was busy and informative none the less!
West Week was in full swing at the Pacific Design Center, and there were Keynote Panel discussions being held to discuss the rise of social media as it pertains to the design industry at large and to print media in particular. I wanted to attend as many of the panels as possible.

I arrived at the Farmer's Daughter Hotel Tuesday afternoon in time to freshen up before Christian May of Maison 21 picked me up for a party at WS Home for Margaret Russell of Elle Decor. She was in residence to sign her wonderful book, Style and Substance, The Best of Elle Decor (which I posted about HERE).
Before I go further, I just wanted to give you one of the best pieces of news I had during my stay in LA! Margaret Russell told me that Elle Decor now has officially launched their new website!!! (previously Elle Decor was part of the point click home website) The new website is full of exciting new features including a comprehensive LookBook with photos from all of your favorite editorials. You can also explore design destinations around the globe, and get expert design advice in the Home Design 101 section. There are sections on Design, Remodeling, Shopping, Celebrity Style, Entertaining, as well as a Resources section. I am told there is much more to come as well. So have fun checking it all out!
So...back to the party! It was such a fun evening for many reasons. I had not been to a WS Home store in a very long time. There are only two in California: Beverly Hills and Palo Alto. It was a treat to see everything in person and very nice to know that the catalog and website show off how beautiful the inventory is in person. The other reason the party was so great is that I finally got to meet blogger friends from all over the country, and in one case from overseas. I did not get as many pictures as I would have liked, but here are a few people you might recognize:
Moi, Monelle Totah (Vice President of Design for WS Home), Patricia Shackelford (Mrs. Blandings) and Christian May (Maison 21)

It was such a pleasure meeting Monelle Totah of WS Home. She was charming and so very gracious. She is the reason WS Home has such beautiful things! You can check out Monelle's beautiful San Francisco flat on the Elle Decor website HERE! Such a great home!!) And Patricia of Mrs. Blandings was out from Kansas City. She was just like her blog: so nice and welcoming, smart, interested and savvy...not to mention classically beautiful! And Christian May of Maison 21...the perfect host: handsome, witty and so much fun!!!! He made my stay in LA the best (more with Christian later!).

Ronda Carmen of All the Best, Scot Meacham Wood of Tartanscot, me again, and Christian May
Ronda Carmen of All the Best was there all the way from the UK. We time for just a quick "hello" but there were so many people, it was difficult to chat. Next time! My friend Scot from Tartanscot was down from San Francisco looking as debonair as usual!.There were so many there that I could not get pictures of! It was so great to get to meet Andrea Borda Stanford, Design and Style Editor for C Magazine in person as well. She is chic, down to earth and beautiful all in one!
(BTW....the latest issue is fantastic...you might want to run out and get it before it is gone....just sayin').
As the party was winding down, I was chatting with Megan of Beach Bungalow 8, and who should walk by but Eddie Ross and partner Jaithan. We gave each other that immediate warm blogger hug that bloggers in touch over the years give upon first sight. We all decided to go to dinner so we could continue the conversation. As per Megan's fantastic suggestion, we went to El Carmen...home of the best tacos and tequila in LA (250 kinds of tequila at last count!). If you are ever in LA, you have to stop in.....if for no other reason than to see the interior, which houses the best collection of Mexican Wrestlers painted on black velvet I have ever seen. Killer. Kudos to Megan as our guide. It was a riot!

After dinner, this girl was off to the hotel to rest up for the Keynote panels the next day. Stay tuned!!!
